5 daily habits that will help you lose weight

Pick up any dieting book and it’ll most likely claim to help you lose weight quick and *ahem ahem* keep it off. I mean in no way am I going to discredit those to have successfully managed to do so, they only represent a small percentage of people who have embarked on such programmes. You might be really motivated for a period of time, but eventually we get busy, get tired, it becomes almost a huge chore to stick to your dieting plans. When that happens, we usually end up eating unhealthy food to satisfy our cravings and feel better. I mean I ain't gonna lie, a nice, grease-filled burger always tastes great.

Well having said that, I’m sorry to burst your bubble but in reality, there really isn't a ‘one size fits’ all solution to losing weight. Different plans work better for certain people, some don’t work at all for certain people. The first step towards your weight loss journey should be understanding your own body; your body composition especially, knowing your body’s wants and needs as well.

In this following article, I will share with you ways to kick start your journey to losing a couple pounds easily. This is NOT going to be a diet plan, I will simply share with you a few habits of people who do not diet at all but maintain a healthy weight. Implement these tricks and I assure you that you will end up healthier & slimmer.

Rule #1 : Reduce your sugar intake.

The very first and most basic habit I recommend all of you to implement is definitely cutting out your sugar intake.“Overdosing” regularly on sugary products is something most people do, but do not understand that it's actually really detrimental towards their overall health in the long run. It puts you at high risk for developing many health conditions that aren't necessarily fatal, but I’m sure you don't wanna go through all that just due to the fact you refused to stop drinking 1.5L of Cola everyday.

Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease, Cancer and Tooth Decay have all been linked in some way to diets with high sugar intakes. The average Singaporean, based on data provided by theNational Nutrition Survey consumes about 12 teaspoons (about 60g) of sugar everyday, the recommended intake for men is 9 teaspoons, whereas for women it's6 teaspoons.

The benefits of reducing sugar in your daily diet surely outweigh the drawbacks though.

Once you get through that rough detox period, you will find a range of benefits.

Rule #2 : Plan your meals on a weekly basis

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”,how many of you remember your annoying teachers nagging this exact phrase to you during your schooling days? Well as it turns out, there is an element of truth in it. Planning our meals is actually a really good way to count our calories and keep check of what we’re putting into our bodies. Meal planning and organisation is a very important aspect of eating well, especially when you’re busy. Here’s why:

  • Helps you avoid fast foods

Essentially, meal planning really puts back the control into your hands.

Rule #3 : Make time for working out

I do drag myself to exercise, but hey, nothing beats the satisfaction when you can see the changes in your lifestyle taking an effect on your physical appearance and well being. Getting into the habit of exercising regularly can be a chore, but once you’re in, you may never let go. Trust me.

Incorporate exercises into your daily life through various physical activities. 30 minutes a day of physical activity, 5 times or more a week will do you wonders. Even if you are very busy, make time for it.

Here is what you can do:

  • Walk to work
  • Skip the elevator and take the stairs

Create a regular workout routine for yourself. It can be jogging, swimming, or cycling. Try different types of exercises for variety and also for the different health benefits. Exercising does not have to be a lonely activity. Get your friends to join in some group sports, such as badminton, basketball or tennis.

Rule #4 : Drink Water

Your body is 60% water, your brain and heart are 70%water and pretty much every important organ you have is mostly water. Sorry I got lazy but just google it.

Water keeps every system in the body functioning properly and has many important jobs, such as:

  • Carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells
  • Flushing bacteria from your bladder
  • Aiding digestion
  • Ar eventing constipation
  • Normalizing blood pressure

Giving your body enough fluids to carry out those tasks means that you're staying hydrated.If you don't drink enough water each day, you risk becoming dehydrated. Water also keeps us full, without piling on calories, this can make us less hungry and in the long run will lead to us eating less and thus LOSING WEIGHT.  Warning signs of dehydration include weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion, or urine that's dark in color. (If your urine is a dark yellow or brown, please drink some water)

Rule #5 : Sleep like a baby

A good night’s sleep is incredibly important for your health. In fact, it’s just as important as eating healthy and exercising. People are now sleeping less than they did in the past, and sleep quality has decreased as well.

Here are some reasons why proper sleep is essential

  1. Poor sleep is linked to a higher body weight
  2. Good sleep makes you less hungry
  3. Improve concentration, productivity and athletic performance
  4. Reduce risk of heart disease and stroke
  5. Poor sleep makes you less sociable and is linked with a higher chance of developing depressio

The bottom line is that along with nutrition and exercise, good sleep is one of the pillars of health.You simply cannot achieve optimal health and lose weight without taking care of your sleep.
